How the Schools Outreach Programme is tackling The Problem
Nearly half of pupils aren’t meeting recommended activity levels—and schools are under increasing pressure to re-engage them in meaningful, high-quality sport.
The challenge isn’t just getting pupils active. It’s helping them enjoy participation, build confidence, and see clear progress. This is especially true for those who don’t think of themselves as “sporty” or are "shy".

At Gala Academy, we’re working with schools to tackle this through our School Outreach Programme a structured badminton development pathway designed to increase participation, improve behaviour, and create long-term engagement in the sport.
Why Traditional After-School Clubs Aren’t Enough
Most after-school clubs do one thing well: they keep pupils busy!
But “busy” doesn’t always mean:
Improved skills
Greater confidence
Long-term engagement
Without structure and clear progression, many pupils—especially less-active ones—drop out or disengage. They don’t see improvement, they don’t feel successful, and they often don’t identify with traditional team sports.
Why Badminton Works So Well in Schools

Badminton is proving to be one of the most effective ways to engage a broad range of pupils because it is:
Inclusive – Gender neutral and pupils don’t need to be “sporty” to get started.
Accessible – Easy to deliver indoors, with minimal space and equipment.
Confidence building – Progress is visible quickly when taught well.
We’ve seen pupils who were previously disengaged become active, enthusiastic participants within weeks—simply by shifting from unstructured club activity to a coached, development-focused programme.
Aligning with School Priorities
Schools don’t necessarily need more clubs—they need better programmes. Our School Outreach Programme is designed to:
Deliver measurable outcomes
Improved participation, confidence, and behaviour can be tracked and evidenced.
Support Ofsted personal development outcomes
Through character-building, teamwork, responsibility, and leadership opportunities.
Strengthen PE & Sport Premium impact
By investing in a structured, sustainable programme rather than isolated activities.
Align with whole-school priorities
Including wellbeing, inclusion, and raising aspirations.
Starting with a 6 Week Pilot
To make adoption simple, we offer a 6-week pilot so schools can see the impact first-hand before making longer-term decisions.

Duration: 6 weeks
Low Cost: approximately £7 per pupil
Delivery: small groups, specialist coaching, clear progression
Aim: is to increase participation, build confidence, & demonstrate measurable impact
This gives senior leaders, PE leads, and governors clear evidence of what a structured badminton programme can achieve—without a large upfront commitment.
A Simple Starting Point.
Long-Term Impact.

The School Outreach Programme is intentionally simple to get started with, but designed for long-term value:
A simple starting point – Easy-to-launch pilot with clear structure.
A structured approach – Coaching, progression, and pathways built in.
A long-term impact – More active pupils, stronger school sport culture, and real leadership opportunities.
If your school is looking to:
Re-engage less-active pupils
Strengthen PE and sport provision
Demonstrate clear outcomes for Ofsted and PE & Sport Premium
…a structured badminton development programme could be a highly effective solution.
What Makes the Programme Different?
This isn’t a generic after-school club. It’s a coaching programme focused on real progress.
Key features:
Specialist coaches
Trained badminton coaches deliver high-quality, engaging sessions that accelerate skill development.
Small group ratio (1:12)
More attention per pupil, better feedback, and quicker improvements.
Structured progression
Sessions are planned to build skills week by week, with clear milestones.
Pathways beyond the session
Links into competition, DofE, and leadership opportunities help extend impact beyond the sports hall.
The results schools are seeing:
Higher engagement
Better behaviour
More confident pupils
From Participation → Progression → Competition → Leadership
Our School Outreach Programme is built around a simple but powerful idea. Sport becomes embedded in a school when it offers a clear pathway—from first participation through to leadership.

The programme is designed to support that journey:
Participation – Engaging less-active and hesitant pupils through inclusive sessions.
Progression – Structured coaching that focuses on skill development and clear improvement.
Competition – Pathways into appropriate formats of competition for those who are ready.
Leadership – Opportunities to link into DofE, leadership roles, and pupil-led sport.
This approach doesn’t just “add another club”; it helps schools build a sustainable sporting culture.
